TRFV CAT II ARFF Fire Engine
The TRFV (CAT II) is the first choice for small airfields or as a first response vehicle at larger airports.
The TRFV is designed to meet the requirements of a Category 2 (CAT 2) classification under Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, with a water capacity of 670 liters and foam performance level B or C, is specifically tailored for airports handling smaller aircraft. These vehicles are utilized at locations where the risk levels are lower, such as regional airports or helipads that handle light aircraft or helicopters. The smaller water capacity and foam specifications reflect the reduced firefighting needs associated with these operations, while still ensuring compliance with aviation safety regulations.
The 670-liter water tank is optimized for smaller-scale aircraft fires, and the appliance is equipped with foam concentrate that meets ICAO’s performance level B or C. This foam is designed to provide effective fire suppression for fuel fires or flammable liquid spills commonly associated with aviation incidents. Performance level B or C foam offers a good balance between rapid fire knockdown and burn-back resistance, which is critical in preventing the re-ignition of fuel during rescue operations. Although the water capacity is lower than that of larger appliances, the combination of water and high-quality foam ensures that the vehicle can suppress fires effectively within the scope of CAT 2 operations.
In terms of firefighting agents, the appliance also carries complementary extinguishing agents, such as dry chemical powder (DCP), which is used to tackle fires involving electrical systems or flammable liquids. DCP is essential for combating fires that water or foam alone cannot extinguish. Additionally, the pump system is designed to provide a high flow rate, typically in the range of 600-800 liters per minute, ensuring that water and foam can be applied quickly and efficiently in an emergency situation.
Mobility and speed are critical aspects of a CAT 2 fire appliance. The vehicle is typically compact and highly maneuverable, making it capable of rapid response even in tight or confined airport environments. With four-wheel-drive (4WD) capabilities, these appliances can navigate uneven terrain and reach an incident site within the required 2-minute response time outlined by ICAO. The appliance’s cabin is designed to accommodate two firefighters, equipped with all necessary firefighting tools, including hoses, breathing apparatus, and rescue equipment.
Further enhancing its operational effectiveness, the appliance can be fitted (as an option) with communication systems, lighting for night-time operations, and thermal imaging cameras, ensuring that the firefighting crew can locate and address fire hotspots even in challenging visibility conditions. Despite its smaller size and capacity, this fire appliance meets all necessary ICAO and CAA guidelines, making it a vital asset in maintaining safety at airports where smaller aircraft are in use.
